The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination is a standardized test consisting of four parts. It is set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The pass percentage of the exam is around 50%, consistently making this one of the tougher exams to clear.
In addition to passing the four exams, candidates must complete work experience requirements (based on which state the candidate sits for the exam) in order to add the title ‘CPA’ to their name. The designation opens a world of opportunities to all accountants – from assurance, tax, senior accounting, forensic accounting,etc.
Each standardized exam consists of five ‘testlets’ consisting of multiple choice questions (MCQs) and task-based simulations (TBS) a.k.a ‘SIMs’. It is a progressive test, which means one cannot go back to a testlet after submitting it and needs to move on to the next. Each exam is four hours long, with a 15-minute standardized break. The countdown clock continues to tick during optional breaks.
The four exams are
Financial Accounting and Reporting(FAR) – assesses knowledge and skills related to financial reporting requirements of business entities -public, private and government
Regulation (REG)- assesses knowledge and skills related to U.S. Federal Taxes and U.S Business Laws
Auditing and Attestation (AUD) – assesses the knowledge and skills related to Audit and attestation compliance of business entities -public & private
Business Environment and Concepts(BEC)– assesses the knowledge and skills in diverse areas such as corporate governance, Economics, Financial Management, Information Technology & Operations management
